LIFE

On Beaver Pond, in rural Maine

Although Ian Harvie didn’t have a language for his identity growing up on Beaver Pond, in rural Maine in the 70s & 80s, he knew he was trans* at an early age. Harvie had the pleasure of coming out twice, as he describes in his routine. “The first time I came out to my parents, I was a girl. I simply told them, ‘I like girls’. The second time I came out to my parents, I said ‘Mom, Dad, I still like girls and I want to be a dude’, you can imagine how that went over.”

Harvie began his standup comedy career in 2002 at a local comedy club in Portland, Maine. He continued with his new found passion of writing and performing material throughout the northeast. Four years into his budding career, Ian moved to Los Angeles (2006) to pursue the art and began working with the iconic comic, Margaret Cho, as her regular opening act for 3 years.

During that time, Harvie toured all over the world with Cho, then turned solo act, cross-country headliner and groundbreaking transgender comedian. Unafraid to joke about subjects no other comedian has ever touched, Ian’s unique act challenges the traditionally macho, sex-obsessed world of stand up in ways you won’t believe, proving that laughter cuts across all gender identities and ultimately unites us all.

He continues to perform in clubs, theaters and colleges around the globe and has appeared in some of the world’s most prestigious comedy festivals: JUST FOR LAUGHS in Australia and Canada, and the MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL in Australia, and SKETCHFEST in San Francisco. Ian travels back to his home state of Maine every summer since 2011, for a couple of weeks, to produce his own home-grown style comedy writing camp, followed by the MAINE COMEDY FESTIVAL.

Ian made his acting debut as “Dale” in the critically acclaimed, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning TV series TRANSPARENT on Amazon. You may have also seen Ian guest starring as “Bud” on the return season of NBC’s WILL & GRACE, ”Michael” on the ABC soapy, nighttime drama, MISTRESSES; as “Chris” on FREEFORM’s hilarious, millennial sitcom YOUNG AND HUNGRY; and as himself on COMEDY CENTRAL’s THE NIGHTLY SHOW WITH LARRY WILMORE, and much more.

In the summer of 2018, Harvie became a theater kid again, starring in his debut performance as “Henry” in Jordan Harrison’s new play LOG CABIN at Playwrights Horizon’s Theater, off-Broadway in New York. The hilarious and political play featured and all-star ensemble, with skilled thespian, Jesse Tyler Ferguson at the helm.

Harvie’s one-hour standup comedy special MAY THE BEST COCK WIN was filmed for NBC’s digital network, SEESO released early 2018, now streaming on Starz, Amazon, iTunes, Google Play and other streaming services.

Harvie has toured performing standup comedy to raise money for numerous causes including but not limited to: recovery centers and houses, abortions rights, and numerous LGBTQIA causes.

Ian understands first hand what it feels like to not be able to see yourself in someone else, and how his representation as an out, proud, happy trans* man may help others trans* and gender non-confirming folks feel like they exist. That is one of the reasons why he mentors numerous trans* and queer youth around the world.
